What would you do if your fears got hacked and used against you?
Although it has no official date yet, the upcoming cyberpunk horror game is slated for a Q2/Q3 release in 2017, with the games official website still claiming the game will hit the market in “Summer 2017.”
Those unfamiliar with Bloober Team and publisher Aspyr by name may have heard of the game Layers of Fear, which was one of the Games with Gold on Xbox Live in early March 2017. While it was not received to rave reviews, Layers of Fear was generally viewed in a favorable light, featuring some novel ideas. Bloober is also known for titles such as Basement Crawl and Brawl, action titles exclusive to PlayStation 4.
Observer is set in 2084 Poland in the aftermath of “digital plague” referred to as the nanophage, which took the lives of thousands, resulting in war and rampant drug use throughout the country – an event referred to as the Great Decimation. Afterwards, a megacorporation named Chiron took authority over Poland and reorganized what remained into the Fifth Polish Republic.
A police unit known as “Observers” were charged with controlling the denizens of the Fifth Polish Republic and given a license to hack their minds, at risk of losing their own minds in the process. The player controls Daniel Lazarski, a Cracovian detective inthe Observers police unit tasked with hacking targets’ memories and fears by utilizing a device known as the Dream Eater. Equipped with augmented vision, Daniel is able to analyse and highlight certain objects in his environment, which in a hacked brain is subject to active change.
Observer will be a first person horror game, similar to Layers of Fear in that the environment will change around the player, created using Unreal Engine 4. Little other information is available on the game at the moment, but there is a teaser trailer available from the Game Developer’s Conference in April 2017, as well as a 10 minute gameplay video from E3 just last week.
No price point or install size is available yet, but the game will be coming to OSX, Linux (which builds are not specified), Windows, Xbox One, and PS4 in Summer 2017. For those interested in cyberpunk and dystopian science fiction, this will be one of a few intriguing titles to watch out for before the year ends.
